The defenses were a form of protection, the responses were about survival. When abuse occurs, a child or teenager defends and responds the only way they know how. What was done to protect yourself, and what was done to make it possible to create some dignity for yourself was necessary for survival.
Today, it is safer to speak to the injustice, unfairness, and the terror that were a part of the experiences, and you can speak with the safety that was not there as a child. By acknowledging what it is you needed to do to protect yourself, you will be taking an important step in putting the past behind you and moving from a life of shame to choice.
